In our Chemistry on the Farm series, students will explore the fundamentals of chemistry through hands-on experiments and discover how chemistry is at work all around us on the farm!
We are currently enrolling for Week 1.
Schedule
Week 1: Mass, Volume, & Density: November 2
In our first week of Chemistry on the Farm, we’ll explore the properties of matter as we learn about mass, volume, and density. Through hands-on experiments using everyday materials found around the farm, students will practice scientific measurement, calculate density, and discover how these important chemistry concepts apply to the world around us!
Week 2: Atoms, Elements, and the Periodic Table: November 9
Step back in time to explore two of Earth’s earliest groups of land plants! Students will investigate mosses and ferns in the field, discovering how these In Week 2 of Chemistry on the Farm, we’ll explore the building blocks of matter as we learn about atoms, elements, and the periodic table. Through hands-on activities, students will discover how atoms are structured, how elements are organized, and how these tiny building blocks play an important role in everything around us on the farm!
Week 3: Mixtures & Solutions: November 16
In Week 3 of Chemistry on the Farm, we’ll explore mixtures and solutions as we discover what happens when different substances are combined! Through hands-on experiments, students will investigate how substances dissolve, how mixtures can be separated, and how these chemistry concepts are used in everyday life on the farm.
Week 4: Chemical Reactions on the Farm: November 23
In Week 4 of Chemistry on the Farm, we’ll explore chemical reactions and discover how substances interact to form entirely new substances! Through hands-on experiments, students will investigate the signs of chemical reactions, learn about the conservation of mass, and discover how chemical reactions are happening all around us on the farm!
Week 5: Acids, Bases, & Soil pH November 30
In Week 5 of Chemistry on the Farm, we’ll explore acids, bases, and the pH scale as we discover how chemistry affects the soil beneath our feet! Through hands-on experiments, students will test soil pH, investigate neutralization reactions, and learn how soil acidity influences plant growth and nutrient availability on the farm.
Week 6: Chemistry of Soil: December 7
In Week 6 of Chemistry on the Farm, we’ll dig into the chemistry of soil and discover what makes it so important for plant growth! Through hands-on experiments, students will investigate soil composition, explore how different soils hold nutrients, and learn how soil chemistry affects the health and productivity of our farm.
Week 7: Fertilizer Chemistry & Environmental Applications: December 14
In Week 7 of Chemistry on the Farm, we’ll explore fertilizer chemistry and discover how farmers use essential nutrients to help plants grow! Through hands-on experiments, students will investigate the chemical composition of fertilizers, explore how nutrients move through soil and water, and learn how chemistry helps farmers grow healthy crops while protecting the environment.
